The Catholic Church views marriage as a sacrament that cannot be broken unless one spouse dies. Even if you have received a legal divorce, you cannot remarry in the Catholic Church or receive Holy Orders, unless the Church grants you an annulment. A Catholic annulment, unlike a legal annulment, does not deny the existence of a marriage, it establishes that the marriage was not a proper sacrament. An annulment may be granted if you can prove that any one of these elements was missing at the time of the marriage.
